How To Start A WordPress Blog (For A Podcast Or Not)

Learning how to start a WordPress blog can be both fun and profitable.

But if you try to create a blog without a little guidance, it can be easy to quickly get frustrated and quit. We don’t want that!

We’re going to run through how I would start a WordPress blog in 2021 – plus give you some additional options that are popular these days.

There are a few different things you’ll need (which we’ll go through in more detail) in order to get your WordPress site online including:

  • A topic or niche
  • A domain name (the .com)
  • WordPress hosting (where your site “lives”)
  • A WordPress theme (how your blog looks)
  • WordPress plugins (how to customize your site)

And of course, a little time to get things set up and modified (I’ll show you the default settings to change a little later).

List of iTunes Podcast Categories (Podcasts Connect Categories)

Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes Podcasts) is the first podcast directory you should submit your podcast too.

You can choose up to 3 separate categories for your show. We recommend you select all 3 so you have more places to be found.

If your show fits into one of the subcategories, we recommend you choose that because you’ll also be listed in the main category.

For example, if your show is about nutrition, when you choose the Nutrition subcategory, you’ll be listed in both the main Health & Fitness category and the Nutrition subcategory.

Also, make sure the first category you choose in your podcast platform is the most relevant as that will be the main category you’ll be listed in.

Apple recently changed the official Podcast categories and this list is updated as of October 2021.

How To Create (Or Find) Your Podcast RSS Feed On The Top Platforms

You need a podcast RSS feed to submit your podcast to iTunes and other podcast directories.

You’ll typically get your RSS feed from your podcast hosting company. This is by far the easiest way to create a podcast RSS feed. Details below.

Or you can get (or create) your feed from your own website if you use something like Squarespace or the PowerPress plugin for WordPress.

Make sure you don’t upload your audio files directly to website host (with Squarespace being the one exception) as that will cause major issues. You will need to host your .mp3’s with a dedicated podcast host.

You want to make sure you submit a feed with only your podcast episodes, not a combination of blog posts and podcast episodes.

I’ll show you how to create (or find) your podcast-only RSS feed on the most popular platforms, but first, there are some requirements you need to make sure you follow before trying to submit your feed:
