2021 Podcast Stats & Facts (New Research From Jan 2021)

Updated stats: Edison Research Infinite Dial 2020 released March 19th, 2020. Q1 2018 report from Nielsen came out March 20, 2018. Total number of podcasts & episodes on Apple Podcasts updated January 2021.

As new stats and reports come out, this post will be updated with the latest info on the podcast listener landscape.

There is both an infographic (with embed code) and a Pinterest image for your sharing needs as well!

Also, a common question is “how many podcasts are there?” and most of the data out there is outdated, but we have an accurate method for determining the number of shows – and it’s currently over 1,750,000.

There are also over 43 million episodes as of January 2021.

To highlight the growth, Apple confirmed there were over 550,000 podcasts at WWDC 2018 in early June.

An article published April 25, 2018, by FastCompany states there are:

Over 525,000 active shows and over 18.5 million episodes

And an article by Variety back in Feb 2018 said:

Apple Podcasts … features more than 500,000 active podcasts, including content in more than 100 languages.

It’s no surprise that those numbers are climbing daily.

I have both a YouTube channel and a podcast. While my niche is very popular on YouTube with many others, I have found that podcasting the scary stories on my podcast is much more popular out the door than my YouTube channel has ever been. I don’t know if it is because of the age difference between my listeners and the younger people than I who tell the scary stories on youtube or what, but I absolutely love podcasting and will make sure it is the biggest part of my show. It makes more sense anyway, I tell scary stories.

There are pros and cons to each platform for sure. And there are typically different audiences on each so if you can be on both, that’s the way to go!

Pat Flynn did a great comparison of YouTube vs Podcasting recently as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Thk0QG9xak

Thanks for the video. I do both, but I the way youtube seems to work in my genre is that it is heavily keyword based. It’s better to say “5 scary true ghost stories” than use an actual title in individual episodes like I do with the podcast.

Sorry the delay, not sure I’ve seen that info though. Just updated the total number of podcasts though!
